AUX-ROIS-LOUIS’S TREASURES FILMING AT CHÂTEAU DE BIRON IN PÉRIGORD FOR THE SERIES ‘FORTUNE DE FRANCE’
Adapted from Robert Merle’s literary fresco, a writer native to Sarlat, the “Fortune de France” series directed by Christopher Thomson took up residence at Château de Biron, seat of one of the oldest baronies in Périgord, in spring 2023. It was in the courtyard of this castle, having taken a leap back five centuries through the decorators, that the inaugural scene saw its “action.” The interior of this fortress, now property of the Department of Dordogne, was also skilfully redecorated to fit the era of the Wars of Religion. Many furniture pieces and other treasures were unearthed by the chief set decorator at the Aux-Rois-Louis Gallery, delighted to lend some of its finest pieces for this ambitious and promising shoot. The six 52-minute episodes, entirely filmed in Dordogne, will be broadcast next season on France 2..
Knight’s Oak Armour Chest – 15th Century – High Middle Ages – Périgord – [ME148]
Impressive in size, this oak chest comes from a fortress in Périgord. It remains a testament to its past grandeur. Its mission was, in its time, to welcome back from battles the weapons and armour of the Knight Master of the house. It is rare to be able to observe this type of castle furniture, typical of the early Gothic style of the High Middle Ages, as very few armour chests were made at that time and most have since disappeared. Its original raw wood expresses natural nuances ranging from light oak to medium oak. On this grain, motifs of pleated parchment ennoble the panels. Its so-called “moustache” hinges also come directly from the 15th century. These decorations and fittings bring an appreciable touch of delicacy to this sturdy and valorous knight’s armour chest.
