Louis XIII two-tiered walnut buffet – 17ᵗʰ century – South West France
The unusually diminished size of the upper cabinet makes this piece particularly appealing. This buffet is a true gem, attesting to the rigorous precision of the Louis XIII style released by the audacity of the Renaissance.
The doors of the top cabinet are surrounded by lion face mascarons and cascades of fruit and foliage pouring down. The Louis XIII lower cabinet has little double thread corner columns surmounted by cherubs’ heads, and the portrait of the 17ᵗʰ century client takes pride of place above the central column.
