Louis XV style country sideboard in walnut, oak and elm – 19ᵗʰ century – South West of France
The mix of wood species, in this case walnut, oak and elm, evokes a short circuit, ecological production ahead of time. In fact, the peasants stored, in anticipation of an important family event such as a marriage or the birth of children, beautiful planks from the different trees in their forest. When the time came, these duly dried boards were given to the carpenter.
This type of country buffet was very popular in the 19ᵗʰ century. This offers the advantage of having been designed and shaped by incorporating the curvaceous femininity of the Louis XV style. The projecting moldings of the doors faithfully match the scalloped patterns, typical of the Louis XV style. The central frame is enriched with the sculpture of three vertical grooves.
In the end, this sideboard with two doors and two drawers reveals the finesse and poetry of the country world which desired, thought and welcomed it.
