Winemaker's table in oak and poplar – 19ᵗʰ century – Champagne

The assembly of varied geometric patterns, a cross set with four triangles joined together inside the circle of the top, is highlighted thanks to the choice of nuanced wood species, namely oak and poplar. This manner attests to the provenance of this delicate winegrower’s table from a prestigious cellar in the Champagne region.

This round table was used when tasting the vintage of the year in the cellar itself. This is why it is made up of a tilting tray, allowing it to be stored after tasting, sometimes even hanging on the wall in order to occupy as little space as possible.

In this raised position, the top reveals the pivoting lyre and the wooden spring from below to fix it to ensure the stability of the top in the table position.

It is interesting to observe the way the tray rocks. The central part of the lyre-shaped base can pivot to hold the top in its working position, horizontally. In fact, this lyre-shaped piece pivots 90° to come under the lowered top, locking into place to stabilize it in a clever wooden spring operated by hand by the winemaker.

And here is finally the way in which it is advisable to activate the spring to release the lyre in order to tilt the tray to store this pretty winegrower's table.

This delicacy and this flexibility of transport and storage make it one of the most refined small pieces of furniture and best suited to our current needs as a summer kitchen or as a side table during friendly or family gatherings.
